Lashkar-e-Jhangvi

The Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) or the 'Army of Jhang' is a Sunni Islamist organization that commits terrorist acts. Traditionally, the group has been against individuals or groups belonging to the Shiite community in Pakistan. The main objective of the group is to transform Pakistan into a Sunni state as Iran is a Shia state. The LeJ believes that Shiites are heretics or infidels of Islam. LeJ also believes that the Shia is the main obstacle to the establishment of an orthodox caliphate. Since 11 September 2001 and the American coalition\'s attack on the Taliban in Afghanistan, members of the LeJ have also been involved in attacks against Christians and foreigners in Pakistan. LeJ is driven by political, religious and ideological objectives.
